Marian Martin 8237: TICK!

Here's the tablecloth dress, all complete!

It's a Marian Martin Pattern (here's several others, the drawings are all very curvy and darling):

It didn't say the size anywhere (that I could see) until I cut out all the pattern pieces and noticed a '36' printed on the skirt pattern piece. So you'll see I'm pulling in the dress a little in the photos above as it's sadly not my size!

THE STATS
Fabric: an old tablecloth of light linen/cotton, from the Op Shop, and white wide ribbed lining material, also from the Op Shop
Pattern: Marian Martin 8237 (from Amanda's Collection)
Notions: Vintage thread, vintage cream zipper
Time to complete: 6 hours (handstitching the lining takes ages!)
Year: not sure! Some websites are saying Marian Martin is from the 1950s
First worn: Just for the photos
Wear again? Not my size!
Total Cost:  Maybe $6... as sometimes tablecloths are around $4 (not as cheap as loose fabric) so with the lining fabric and the zipper, around $6 in total.

  1. I love it. I love the way you've used the print in the tablecoth. Well done.:)
I am totally with you on the handstitching. It just seems to go on forever sometimes.

  2. This is just beautiful! You look amazing! wrt not being your size (and what a pity) how would a wide belt around the middle to cinch it in at the waist work? It's too good not to wear lots and lots. I love the pattern placement, you've worked it into the skirt and bodice design so beautifully.

ages. I am in awe of your skill. Just started learning again - since the last think I sewed was in home ec when I was 15.

  8. Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. I have been thinking about doing something similar for a while now, although probably being conservative and just going for a skirt, but I haven't got off behind and got to op shops for said table cloth. But I love your version and hope you don't mind if I eventually plagerise you

  10. Thanks guys! I have not the patience to alter the dress, so think I'll give it to a friend. Once it's all made up, I can't rewind and backtrack my steps. I wish I could... but all that handstitching! What a waste!

Thank you so much for all your comments, I'm overwhelmed! xoxo

  11. I love your tablecloth dress! The pattern placement is perfect - such a shame you don't get to enjoy the fruits of your labour, but at least your friend will!

  12. How gorgeous! I love the skirt pleats and the way you've made a round table cloth work is amazing! I'm sad it doesn't fit you - I agree though, trying to back track and make it fit after you've finished is way too hard! Such beautiful work - I'm excited to make them too!
