Moving Day

It's time for us to leave the old house and start our new life in our brand new house, wise and hopeful after a few weeks of heartbreak after Doggie Darling passed away. Thank you again, for all your lovely thoughts and well wishes. We do think that she really did live life at the fullest and funnest, for Staffies are  so gungho and such pocket rockets, and this little wee one was just full of beans and made everyone fall in love with her. I'm so glad you all got to know her through this blog as well.

She will be missed and loved.

So, today has been amazing and we've fallen in love with the new house. The above photo is from our old house, a little nook that I really loved, and wanted to photograph before it was all packed away. And the new house... it's just perfect. I'll give you a big old update soon, because we had a quick 2 weeks of DIY renovations (walls/ceilings/floors in 3 rooms and the hallway) and after today, we'll have 90 per cent of the house moved in. Well here's hoping.

Unpacking could take months though! I'm SO pleased the Sew Room was a priority (thanks to Sew Weekly! And my Pin Up post will be up later today), so it's halfway unpacked and that's where I'm typey typing to you now! Husbie and I love our computers and internerds and music so much, we made sure the wifi was the first thing installed!

SSS Day 17 & 18: Weekend Wearz

Self Stitched September continues here at Veronica Darling HQ! Do you mind all these extra photos and blog posts? Am I annoying you yet? It really prompts you to post when you have a challenge like a Handmade Month (if you're just checking in for the first time, hiya! I'm wearing all my handmade garments for all of September! And others are doing it too! YAY!) and of course wear all your things!

Saturday I really wanted to wear no tights, because I'm totes over wintertime and I attempted this dress with shorty shorts and the (thrifted) long sleeve tshirt, but it was just too cold. It was so windy in Melbourne! I added the grey tights to try and trick myself a bit! We went on a big bike ride!

On Sunday we collected our thoughts on things (as you do on a Sunday) and decided we'd buy a Sodastream (!) and do some grocery shopping. I wanted to be a little Stepford Wife, so went with these really old capri's, my darling Melissa heels and this handmade white blouse. I actually had to show you this photo because of Doggie Darling's smiley face! HOWL! What a cutie! The weather was FINALLY ok to wear bare legs!

YAY!

SSS Day 14: Toy Camera

Today a toy camera lens arrived in the post, Husbie bought it for his Canon cameras. It's totally plastic, and has basic settings, here's us testing it out with Doggie Darling in the backyard. These photos are totally raw (apart from my framed curved edges - that I <3 so much!) and are so interesting with the vignette thingie. Husbie was excited about how 'soft' they look. WHATEVER!

As it still is Self Stitched September (did you know there's a facebook group and a flickr group as well? I don't have as much time to update my photos over there, but just getting my outfits up here is enough for me - and you maybe!) here's what I wore today. A LBD and scarf/cowl: handmade ... tights and two cardigans: thrifted... shoes: MELISSA!

I just searched my archives, but I must have made this dress and didn't post a photo of it, way back in 2007. I found THIS dress, which is a second version that I made up for a friend. It's super short, but I wear little black shorts underneath, and considering I'm so petite even if it lifts a bit, no one seems to notice. Of course, I was just working today, but then I had a facial! Yippee! And also, I googled travel details because I decided to go on a holiday to Cambodia with my friend! Double Yippee! More details to come!

The Breaking Bad Blankie

I can't remember when I started this crochet project!? Was it Christmas time? I remember the wool was on sale, so maybe it was post Christmas/January sales? I could look back in my archives, but I wanted to quickly show my progress, because it's starting to look cute to boot!

We've been watching the VERY intense Breaking Bad while I distract myself and multitask with crocheting these squares. I finished the colour squares a little while ago, and have done the black edging all in the past 2 weeks. As it's super cold at night time, I'm DYING to have this finished, and am investigating online all the ways to join the squares up. I know there's heaps of different ways, and I've tried a couple, but am can't make up my mind what style I'd like for this one.

To give you some perspective on the size, here's Doggie Darling, who honestly cannot resist being in my photos at the moment. Anytime I bring the camera out now, she's turning on the charm!

My week has been quite busy, but I'm feeling quite organised. It's SO weird, as I'm working early hours again in my day job, so whilst it's awesome and I'm working with such delightful people each day, I've forgotten how weird and tired you can feel from using so much energy at the start of the day. You can kinda feel like an alien!

Slipping in a refashion

This week for the Sew Weekly theme, we've all been making something out of a pillowcase, or a pair of pillowcases.

Mena has prepared some good advice in looking for these items at the thrift store or op shop, and I'd agree! I'm certainly no stranger to using bedlinen in my creations before, and I'd strongly recommend using doona covers and bedsheets if you are a beginner seamstress! You can cut up as much as you like to try out skirts and dresses, and no harm or great amount of dosh lost if you stuff it up. Believe me, I've stuffed up a LOT in my sewing! AND, I may or may not be starting to reveal a stuff up right now... hmmm?

I went to Savers a few weeks back and found some pillowslips!

Really basic but large printed 80s ones, and the only ones that were a proper twinset that I liked. They are also handmade! CUTE! But, I then went to Sydney for work and finished my dress yesterday, and it's not really up my alley. I wished I'd bought the pillowslips and made the dress straight after, because with a bit of time away from the sewing room... I totally couldn't remember why I'd chosen such a large print and really couldn't remember what pattern I'd had in mind for it... I wish I could plan better with my sewing, but I'm just so impulsive!

Such a show pony is old Doggie Darling! Anyways, my Sew Weekly post goes up later this week and you'll see what's what!

Shoe Lady

You can just call me the shoe lady from now on. When you can make all your own clothes, and follow the darling Wardrobe Refashion eco/sustainability/DIY lifestyle, you tend to hover around shops that sell things you can't make. Like OK OK in Brunswick.

BEST SHOES EVER:

They are Melissa OF COURSE (I'm so obsessed - as you can see here with the Troupe, here with the flatties and here with my first pair of heels) and I fully can't make shoes, so tend to love on the stores that stock up on the shoes I love. I am NOT getting paid to love on these shoes, I love them for heaps of reasons but mostly for biodegradeable/fair work practices and other ethical reasons.

But, OK OK is the best store as Emina has too many Melissa Darlings to choose from! I wanted (in this instance) something straight forward, something that could be worn with loads of colours and flattie in style... my little toes are getting a bigger work out in Melbs. I'm walking HEAPS.

Even Doggie Darling had to cuddle up with them!

I popped by next door (after leaving OK OK) to my HAIRDRESSERS: Corrin's Hair Lounge and showed my 'plain' shoes to the girls there... they decided these WEREN'T plain shoes at all... I wonder what makes me think they are! LOLZ

Wednesday: Workie Day - SSS

It's really sunny in the mornings at the moment in Melbs, and kinda perfect for finding some of my old handmade dresses for Self Stitched September!

This is a dress I made ages ago, and I think I made it for my Hen's Night. It was in summer, so no tights or stocking top was needed. It's from op shop material I got in Orbost (which is really the best country town for op shops - although I say that about all towns I suppose) and the summertime flowers on it will keep me happy through the day. It's a 'jiffy' style 60s pattern, that I still have somewhere. It has elastic around the middle that you make in a casing on the inside. I thought it'd fade after a summer, but it's still going 3 summers on, and perhaps will last out this summer too!

Also note my darling Melissa shoes, my total fave at the moment, from OK OK in Brunswick. What is scary but great: Emina has some new Melissa's in stock and I'm scared to look. I WILL buy some, it's just a question of which ones?

That's the last of our boxes too, in the background! Yay! I have 2 big ones here in my sewing room, but they're full of material and I need to get my shelves sorted (ie. cleaned up by folding the fabric instead of stuffing it in) to unpack them properly.

Via Wagga Wagga

If you're Australian, you know Wagga right? So good, they named it twice? If you're one of my overseas friends, then perhaps you've never heard of Wagga Wagga? Well, today I drove 6 hours south west of Sydney and now I'm here. Tomorrow I'll drive another 6 hours directly south, and then I'll be in Melbourne. Yay Australia is big and fun and we have boundless highways to share.

Doggie Darling and I are travel companions, roadtrip buddies and sick to death of each other's stories by now. But not sick enough for a little cuddle before bedtime. I'm staying at my friends' mum's house and it's been sooooo good. As I'm a country girl myself, as soon as I got to town I drove the main street, spotted Target Country and bought 3 pairs of woolie black tights. Love Target Country.

Wagga Wagga is a bigger town than the one I grew up in, so really spread out and heaps of suburbs. Sadly I missed the op shop hours though. It closed at 4 and I got there at 4.02pm. Give an outta towner a break!

I'm a little overtired so will head to bed now, goodnighty night. And well done on finding my green bag jackets on facey Anon! You legend! I'd saved my high res photos of the boys on my work computer, and then remembered that I'm not at that work desk now. EEP! Will have the phots for you here soon enough!

Sewing Room Destash: Refashion for Dogs

Ok, just a little note this evening (my time of course) as I have a bundle of funny Destash Posts for you! Tips on how to rapidly decrease your stash and refashion pile WITHOUT selling your stuff on ebay (even if certain people in your household would love to see you do that)... sounds good to you? Read ON!

First up! TIGHTS! I buy all secondhand - or make it myself of course - and when I saw this pair of NEW blue ribbed school like tights in the op shop I bought them STRAIGHT away. I thought hey! I'm little and I usually fit ANY size of tights! I wore them last winter, and they were so bright blue and lovely and warm. BUT they sagged around the crutch! They fitted on the hips, but were the longest annoying-est crutch ever... all day long I'd be 'hiking' them up so that my crutch didn't show under my mini skirts.

So! This winter, I was determined to wear them properly! I cut them off at the crutch (and now have darling long socks) and refashioned the crutch piece into (please don't laugh at her) a darling 'off the shoulder' sailor top for my Darling Doggie:

I cut one hole for her head, but used the existing leg holes in the crutch for her own little doggie arms. It was kinda loopy and stretchy around the 'neckline' so I found some other stash off cuts and fashioned a 'binding neckline' and tied the excess into a bow. Tres sailor girl.

So bit by bit, I'm going through my sewing room and tidying up all my loose ends. YAY!

Puppy dreaming

Yay! Home now and so happy to be here.

Whilst there's still a bit of major catch up here at work (I didn't even have time to check my voicemail today, eep!), I took some time at the hair salon for my 'update' and took Doggie Darling! I have *the* best hairdressers, the darling owner of the salon has 4 dogs (or is it 5?) so is totally fine for me to bring my Doggie Darling in. Cuteness! But as you can see she got so tired!

And, my hopes to do some sewing have been dashed as I'm so freaking tired, I've just been on the couch. I opened the sewing room door, and could only see mess, so who knows what I have to do to get it in working over. EEP!

Just one little Doggie Party Update ... Promise!

4. Did Mummy really make her a tutu for her party?

Yes. Yes, I became one of 'Those Dog People' for one day only (or maybe today too, she is lying right on top of me as I type this, my laptop is on my knees, her head is on my left arm and my right arm is over her trying to reach the keys. OH&S much?) and it was so fun. It actually turned out really hot, so these photos (Thanks to Husbie again) totally have the 'look' right! I don't have an iphone (a work blackberry is always in my hand) but Husbie has one and he got this app called the Hipstomatic or something and boy george it's unreal!

I've just got a little button sewing and a little redo of an elastic bit and I'll have some cool things to show you soon! Woo!

Party Day Parents!

Yep, today's going to be a day where my Husbie and I pretty much pretend we are real life parents as we're throwing our DOG a First Birthday Party. ERK! I feel weird, but overly excited at the same time, to become one of 'those' Dog People, but figure we'll just do this once and not subject our friends to this kinda mania every year with Doggie Darling.

Friends and darling loyal readers, I promise my writing here won't turn into a dog blog but just for now, just for this weekend, I think I'm all loved up over my darling little baby, and cannot resist posting about her! Here is Doggie Darling with a new friend she found on the street on her birthday:

I'm beginning to feel a little bit agro over the stuff my Husbie and Doggie Darling keep bringing home after their walks together. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for hard rubbish ravaging, I've found some excellent shelves, cute medicine cases, chairs, tables, and other stuff in my time that I still have and love. BUT, you can imagine my WTF moment when I saw this blue thing.

Oh well, Doggie Darling seemed to like it. Here's her 'Best Doggie in the World' moment:

 Yep, snow all over the backyard. The Blue Friend really should have come with a 'Not Safe For Children Under 3' line...

So for her First Birthday Party today, I'm googling dog cake recipes (YES, one of 'those' Dog People) and think I'm going for a peanut butter one on this Homemade Cakes Site so I'm off down the road for a play in the park with Doggie Darling and I'll pick up some more peanut butter and vegetable oil on the way home.

And as for her Birthday Party? We're going down to this darling lush green park (that's also a sporting area for some parts of the year - Go Newtown Jets!) with our friends and if I have time this morning, I'm going to make a stupidly big red tutu for Doggie Darling to wear. WTF am I doing!!!!??? I must love her so much!

Happy Birthday Bubby Bunny Chunky Monkey

I've been down the coast for a minibreak, had a day of work on a Sunday, and generally tried to keep up appearances by gushing and hiding my tiredness, my period pain, my coldsore, and my hangover.

Thank goodness I survived!

But, I didn't want to miss telling you about my darling little bubby's birthday!

 

This is Doggie Darling when she was still with her real mummy, so not sure how old she is. BUT ISN'T SHE CUTE!?? 

Now Husbie and I have a million nicknames for her; Bubby, Bunny, Chunky Monkey, Ratbag, Naughty, Baby, and heaps more but you know her as Doggie Darling.

And now she's one year old. What a big girl! She's at her full height (for those of you who don't know, she's a Staffordshire Bull Terrier of the UK variety) but she'll chunk out a lot more in chest and perhaps the head area. Hence Chunky Monkey.

I love her, Husbie loves her and the Neighbours love her too. They looked after her over the weekend, and we missed her so much, we'd look at all the cows along the freeway and say 'Oh look at the cows, they look just like Doggie Darling!'. We went down to a place called The Buzza, or so my darling abbrev. friends called it. I LOVE ABBREVIATION! I'd shorten any word if I could. And sometimes I shorten a word and then add a cutesy bit to it. So yoga becomes Yogez. Pronounced Yoh-gz. Like Rogues. Embarrassed becomes Embarrow and then Embazza. And so on. Please don't hate me! I love the English language and adore it so much more when I can make it my own. And hey, I'm a spelling nazi (if you haven't noticed) and always practice correct grammar and spelling online AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

I digress.

So Happy Birthday my little dog, welcome to being a grown up. (And please stop chewing up the outdoor chairs. And please stop jumping so high when you meet new people.)

So Weigal 1949 is coming along great, but a few little problems did pop up since yesterday. And entirely my own overlooking and speediness caused them.

Here's my latest pics though, and I'll flick through what I've completed and perhaps point out my downfalls after...

The front looks great! I'm kinda happy with my matching up of the front sections (although don't stare too hard at the leftish one) all it needs here are the cutie little red buttons to make it look more tailored and spesh.

 

 

Here's the side zippedy doo dar spot, sans zipper of course. I'll finish that off later.

And the darling back look, and my total fave. I adore the scoopy collar and the gathered up waistline on that skirt.

Ok, now for my mistakes! When I cut out the material the other day, I marvelled at my fabric predicting skills, and loved that I used up all the pink fabric (thrifted mind you, so no more!) exactly and precisely as the pattern's cutting instructions told me. Or so I thought...

But I didn't really look at the larger skirt pattern piece, until today. I was supposed to cut out TWO pieces of that larger skirt piece, and not one, as I had done. My darling red arrows are pointing to the folded bits that I totally overlooked.

OOPS!

So I just cut the bit I had in two, and now the skirt was balanced, but without the same amount of gathers and fullness of skirt it should have. BUT, I don't mind the result really, as I've cut the skirt shorter anyways, perhaps less material and fullness is better for a flippy shorter gal.

But then I had a mini disaster when Doggie Darling got excited and jumped onto the very same pattern pieces and ripped a little bit of the tissue. OMG! So terribly sorry Amanda, I did patch it up ok and it's only a small tear, so of course the pattern piece is totally fine to use. All patterns and tissue are now safely tucked away so no other mishaps can happen!

Anyways, gotta dash and start on a few dresses I'm making for Australia Day. My friend is on an adventure and is in need of bright cotton frocks, so more on Amanda's Vintage Pattern Challenge later.

Mrs Tailor strikes again and some blog love

I've officially become Mrs Tailor again, with my friends, neighbours and colleagues asking for my mad sewing skillz to help them and their clothes out. Pretty soon I'll have to update that To Do List of mine, and strike off just as much as what I'll have to add on. Here's my taxi man's shirts all re-hemmed, for he is short in stature like myself, and needs a little balancing out.

I'm going to be a little bit time poor (1990s buzz word again) and just leave you with some THOUGHTS, as both awards were about 'Things You Didn't Know About Me'... I'll choose 8 things, because it's somewhere slightly between 7 and 10.

ONE

I'm about to go to get a facial so am posting quickly before I leave. It's really hot so I'm hoping it's a nice cool one and the facial place is right around the corner from where I live

TWO

The first music concerts I went to were within a few months of each other, so I can't remember if it was Prince (and the New Power Generation tour) or The Cure (touring the Wish album) that I saw first. I tell people it was Prince because he's just so cool. But I suppose The Cure are just as cool.

THREE

I'm really terrible at cashing in or using up gift vouchers. I always lose them because I switch handbags so often, and almost lost a really expensive restaurant voucher yesterday, but luckily found it down the couch.

FOUR

My hands are the same size as an 8 year old boy's. My feet haven't grown since I was 11 years old. I am little in most places, but you obviously can't tell that online. Yippee.

FIVE

My new workmates keep making me talk on the radio and I'm actually getting used to it. I'm very bad at constructing sentences though, and always am paranoid they'll tell a joke and I won't get it.

SIX

I wanted to be a forensic pathologist when I was still at school, and lately I've started thinking about whether I should write crime novels. Or murder mysteries. I did hear a podcast from This American Life though, that was about people who's relatives have been murdered and how it is just awful to see so many murder and intrigue shows on the telly. So I'm in mixed minds.

SEVEN

The facial place just called me and told me it's time to go to my appointment! Funny!

EIGHT

I'm going to leave Doggie Darling inside because it's so hot. Hopefully she won't chew up the couch!

Well it's down to business for us today, we've got unpacked shop bags all over the house, we've got dog toys (some getting chewed right now by my feet) everywhere and my friend is going to pop over this afternoon for a visit.

EEP!

So, whilst it's still kinda holidays, it's cleaning up time, getting organised and prepared for next week (we have house guests from the UK - my fairy godson - yippee!) and I'll go back to work. It feels like a kinda non-weekend, with a large to-do-list up our sleeve, BUT! It's freaking humid and sticky and I just feel like getting a cleaner in and one of those people who 'sorts' out your house. You know, like sorts and orders your bookshelf and shows you how to use cute little containers for your soap and stuff.

I think it's that time of year as well, when you want some order and lists and neatness. I've got to get back to it, because my shiny light could be a few new dresses to go back to work with... Yeah! I'll get it done and then I can sew! Yippee!

Ho Ho Ho from Doggie Darling

Oh dear.

Have I got cabin fever? (I am in a holiday house with my parents, my brother and his fiancee and THREE dogs - please don't tell anyone!)

YES

Have I gone cuckoo for Christmas.

HARDLY BUT A LITTLE BIT

I followed these gorgeously simple instructions, and shortened it just a bit and only did one row of white fluffy stuff (because I couldn't see the actual crochet stitches things with all that fluff). BUT my darling mother, who reads my blog here a little bit too religiously than I realised, helped me with the pom pom. CUTE but dead tired. All the dogs are! They are all under 2 years old, so they initially played all day on the first day... but now... they just sleep.

As I live in a different area to my parents, I don't see them face to face that often, so I save up heaps of stories that I can tell them (I love an audience AND love to pull elaborate facial expressions). But as I like to show off clothes as well (with amazing tales of adventure, as I'm sure you'll recall from this Accidently Granny Pink story) I put the pink dress on today and started to tell Mum and she was like, 'Oh I know. But didn't it turn out great'. SUGAR!

It's funny that sometimes I forget I tell you these stories! Completely daggy sewing stories of my life, but thank YOU for reading them and being a part of my year! Hee Hee!

Hope you're surviving the festive season, family holidays and everything! I'm about to open a bottle of wine and have a quiet glass before everyone arrives back home! YAY

I HEART HEART

Not the band darling... this little heart! Check it out:

Yippee! It's very cute, but I knew I was going to run out of red halfway down (I only ever use stash wool, so thought there was *just* enough) so did a few lines of white wool before ending up on the red. I do like the Sydney Swans footy team (if I had to choose a team in the AFL) so perhaps I could go to the game one time and wave this around and cry I HEART YOU SWANNIES.

Or I could just pin it to my sleeve.

This might be my last post for a while (not sure about internerd connection where we're headed for HOLZ) so thank you darling for reading my words and checking out my pics and being a darling sounding board with your feedback. I drank too much Rose and Champs yesterday to finish off sewing any frocks for my holiday (it'll be too humid in QLD to wear anything but bathers though), so I'll take my little crochet friends in their pieces to sew together on my roadtrip. Better off now, to pack my bags for the trip today... Hang on.... something is in the way of packing my suitcase:

Two weeks left of my day job...

My day job, as I've mentioned before, is funny, fast, early mornings, and full of fun colleagues who are more of the BFF variety than just office pals. I'm very lucky to work with them every day. I talk a LOT and sometimes I laugh so much that my ear starts hurting and then my head pops off from laughing too much! Very lucky gal!

There's 2 more weeks or so left of our 2009, so we're all having a great time, it's like school muck up day every day and there's the real feeling exams are over! Phew! BUT it's pretty sad at the same time. AND I'm making some dresses at the moment for the industry's awards night and it's all very exciting for us gals in the office cause we get to get tizzed up in OUR way... Doggie Darling is helping me go through the patterns today for MY PURPLE DRESS!


I haven't got a good photo of the material yet, but it's purple black and I have these terribly high op shop heels to go with it. I just need to settle on the style:


I'm leaning toward the Vogue Yves Saint Laruent black dress at the moment, it's a fitted bodice, a waist (with belt area) and skirt that I can crop short. And whilst it's got this 'bias attached collar' and sleeves, I'll ditch the sleeves and play around with that crazy collar to get it right. I'm thinking a big fuckoff bow, or something shoulder-ish that seems in fash now. This is all hoping that I have extra material, cause I think I have just over 2 metres, so for a short arse like me that's enough for a dress... but not sure on the 'accessory' collar thing! I chose these two patterns because they need lining, and I've got heaps of op shopped purple lining to use for it, so it should all be cool!

Just a quick question though, how does one usually choose lining? Are their rules on this type of thing? I've chosen this purple shiny stuff because it was in my stash, and I noticed that it keeps changing colours because of the sun, so I better use it soon. That's probably not the ideal reason of choosing a lining fabric. It is shiny and makes a noise... that's kinda like lining too right?

Nonetheless, I'll also make it pretty short and mini in the skirt, because it is the music industry night of nights after all. So a little leg won't hurt anybody.
